Spectrum Printers Installs Xeikon Digital Color Press

Spectrum Printers announces the purchase and installation of a Xeikon DCP 32-D digital color press. We will use this press to enhance our business in short run and variable data printing applications. With a Xeikon press on our floor we can offer you exactly what you need, exactly when you need it. For example, we have a customer with a brochure running 25,000 copies on an offset press for the end of the month. But they need only 500 of that same brochure by the end of the week. Now we can print that part of the job to seamlessly match the longer offset run, and easily in time to meet their deadlines. We demand speed and high quality in all that we produce. The Xeikon DCP 32-D is capable of printing 70 pages per minute. The One-Pass Duplex feature, which enables both sides to be printed at the same time, delivers printing speeds unparalleled in digital printing. The web fed configuration gives the company the format flexibility it requires to offer a variety of booklet and brochure sizes and shapes as well as unlimited possibilities for the image length of a printing job. We are very excited about all the value added features that this digital press has to offer. Installing a Xeikon press significantly expands our commercial printing business and proves to be an ideal addition.

Spectrum's New Xeikon DCP 32-D digital color press can turn your raw data into hard hitting 1:1 communication that will reach each customer with the personal message they need to choose your product or service. Catch the direct marketing wave of the future.

We recently completed a major upgrade in our server and network. We have added a new server with 200 gigabytes of storage for our prepress department. This brings our total online server storage to 315 gigabytes. We also added a new tape backup unit which allows much faster backups to our servers and also better capacity on each tape. We keep copies of all your completed projects on tape for at least 5 years. Our new tape system has a capacity of 3 terabytes (one-thousand gigabytes). Last of all we added a gigabit network switch, allowing much faster transfer speeds between our servers and G-4 Mac's & PC's in prepress. What does this mean to you? Much more efficient movement of files so we spend more time working on projects and less time waiting on the network.

We recently outfitted our sales representatives and delivery drivers with Nextel cellular phones.  These phones give us more than just cell phone capability.  They have a paging service that allows us to send text messages to each person.  They also have the traditional paging that allows a phone number to be input from a touch-tone phone.  Our internal voice mail system is also connected to each sales rep's cell phone.  So you can leave a voice mail for your sales rep here at Spectrum, and it automatically is forwarded to their cell phone.  The phones also have two-way radio capability for sales reps and drivers to communicate with each other instantly.  These services allow us to respond to your needs quickly and efficiently.

December 26, 2000

We recently installed new carpet in our office and prepress areas. Our office staff drew up and implemented modified floor plans of our customer service and accounting areas. While the moving was a lot of work, the new carpet and layout make our work areas look great! A big "thanks" to all of the Spectrum staff that helped with this project.

We have added an exciting feature to our website. For some time, some of our customers have used a link on our web site that allows them to check the status of their projects and inventory. Our web site is connected to our internal information system. Each customer has a unique name and password to view only their information. We have added a special link that will allow everyone to check demonstration job and inventory information. From our home page click on Tracking Demo.

Spectrum recently took delivery of a Creo-Scitex Iris 4Print. This machine will output a 21" x 28" (4up) color digital proof. It's improved color matching capability will make your proofs even more accurate. Put together with our existing Scitex Brisque, and 4Press imagesetter, the new Iris will enhance our workflow and improve the quality of your next project. The new Iris replaces our older 12" x 18" (2up) machine, which has served us well.

Spectrum Printers took delivery of a new Saber S-115 paper cutter on Monday, November 29, 1999. Several of our bindery employees had the opportunity to check out the Saber cutter at the Print Expo in Chicago last month and were impressed with its capabilities and some of the automated features. The new cutter features a built in computer, complete with hard drive and floppy disk for saving and archiving jobs that repeat frequently. The Saber also contains a label feature for repetitive cutting that automates the process and allows "hands off" multiple cuts, freeing the operator to stack and remove the cut pieces or prepare another lift for cutting. It will provide new efficiencies and productivity in our bindery.
The Saber paper cutter also has programmed maintenance and repair instructions built into the console and prompts operators to conduct routine maintenance at the proper intervals. Improved cutting mechanisms increase the life of the cutting blade by about 40%.

July 9, 1999

This past weekend, Spectrum Printers completed the final step to insure our plant will be fully operational on January 1, 2000. The latest version of PSI, our production software, was installed over the 4th of July holiday and is fully operational. Last winter we completed a plantwide check of all workstations and the equipment specific computers that run the ink system on our presses, film output devices and scanners. Even our security system has passed the Y2K test. If you have questions regarding Y2K compliance as it relates to your design software or hardware, please don't hesitate to give us a call.

Spectrum Printers is always on the lookout for qualified team members. Currently we have openings in Customer Service and Bindery. See "Employment" on the "Contact Us" page and email us your resume. If you have pressroom or digital prepress experience, don't be shy...we'd like to hear from you as well.

Spectrum recently took delivery of our new Fuji C-440 Color drum scanner, replacing the Colorgetter we have been using (it is available for purchase). We have also installed our new UMAX Powerlook III flatbed scanner with Binuscan software.

We are using - exclusively - our Scitex 4Press to run our film. This precision device imposes pages "four-up" and punched to match the plates that go on our printing presses. Our registration has never been better.

We've added a digital camera to our pre-press equipment profile and are well on our way to completing a small digital photography studio. This will meet the needs of some of our customers who need product shots to clip and place in such printed material as ads or catalogs.

Our administrative office has just completed a total upgrade to Pentium III 450Mhz computers and NT 4.0. This allows the latest version of our production software (PSI) to run much faster and access customer records with greater ease. Pre-press is in the process of upgrading all of their computers (again!!) and the first of the new furiously fast Macintosh G3's is online.
